community service learning in the Latino community
This course is part of your Spanish language learning experience, and offers you the opportunity to interact in a personal way with members of the local Latino community, thereby enriching your understanding of Hispanic cultures and the Spanish language. As a community-based learning experience, the course provides students with career-related experience working collaboratively with community agencies.
One of my favorite classes was undoubtedly this Sl in the Latino Community , as I was able to do my service to the community. The institution to which I did my service was in Gonzales adult school and in the citizenship program also in the city of Gonzales. It was one of the best experiences I had in this class, my service was based on helping students who do not know English but want to learn. these ESL classes were in the afternoon since many of the students worked for the day and only in the afternoon they could go to class. something that fascinated me to see in them was that they always brought an enthusiasm to learn in spite of tiredness. I helped them when they did not understand something, the most difficult thing for the students was to write in the past and present in a sentence. I also helped them to read and pronounce the words well, while the teacher explained the class, I went round by table to verify that they understood. I really enjoyed my time of service with the ESL students and I could see how during that time they progressed a lot.
In the citizen program I could enjoy helping people who wanted to become citizens, helping them to practice the citizenship questions. Some people did not know English and yet they wanted to learn the questions and that is where they needed more help. During the time I was with them, three people got their citizenship and they were very happy, they told us their experiences and that motivated the others to do better.
At the end of the semester of this class the teacher asked us to make a presentation with a classmate about the experience we had during our service. My partner and I, as we did the same service in the same place in Gonzales, we decided to do it together. Here is our presentation:
